Childhood and Escape
At the age of thirteen, Waris ran away from her family, belonging to a clan of Somali nomads, to avoid being forced into marriage with an older man. Despite having to leave home, Waris speaks lovingly of her father and admiringly of her mother. Her childhood, like that of many of her compatriots, was extremely difficult, as evidenced by the fact that only six out of twelve children in her family survived.
